Muslim-majority Tajikistan bans hijab, regulates Eid festivities
This week, Tajikistan officially banned hijabs and other “alien garments” as parliament passed a new bill regulating Islamic clothing and Eid celebrations. Approved on June 19 by Majlisi Milli, Tajikistan’s upper house, the bill enforces a decade-long unofficial hijab ban in the Muslim-majority nation. Under the new law, individuals wearing hijabs or other banned religious attire face fines of up to 7,920 somonis (about $700).
